HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY

Today, on Independence Day, I spent a little time with the father of my country. No, it wasn’t in a séance or in the District of Columbia, which honors his name. It was in the Cascine Park in Florence, Italy where George Washington is memorialized. A month earlier, I was in the Republic of San Marino, the oldest republic in the world, which has maintained their independence since 1797. Their museum houses a letter written by Abraham Lincoln in 1861, when he was declared an honorary citizen. He wrote, “Although your dominion is small, your State is nevertheless one [...]

A NEW ROOM WITH A VIEW

After spending the first few months of this year with doctors, dentists, accountants, Indian chiefs and candlestick makers, followed by the launch of my third novel, The Ultimate Revenge, the conclusion to "The Simon Trilogy," Joe and l returned to Italy. The month of March whisked by swiftly as we moved off the small street we had come to call home for the past twelve years and returned back down the hill to the center of Florence. Finally settled in, sort of, at least with a functioning telephone and internet, I'm once again poised to begin, Redemption: The Aftermath [...]

THE FERIE CONTINUED

A week has passed and both Joe's red ink and my writing have flourished. And as we worked through The Ultimate Revenge, we continued to move through Italy and then into Switzerland to Locarno, where the International Film Festival was about to begin. Locarno is situated on the northern edge of Lake Maggiore and is part of the Swiss region of Ticino. It boasts nine heritage sites, including several churches and a castle. The earliest historical records from Locarno date back to the fourteenth century. This charming lakeside retreat has been the home to the Film Festival for sixty-six [...]

IL FERIE

By |2016-10-19T09:46:47-04:00July 29th, 2013|Categories: Personal Musings, Travel|Tags: , , |

After months of writing and after having completed the first twenty-six chapters of The Ultimate Revenge, it was time for a change of venue. So we decided to go on a ferie...not to be misconstrued as a ferry. Ferie means holiday in Italian and the locals consider it a short getaway, not quite a vacation. And even though we will be traveling for two weeks—for Joe and I—it's definitely at ferie. We'll devote five hours each day in the afternoon to WORKING. In fact, as I type this blog Joe is happily editing—his red pen has been poised for [...]

FESTA DELLA REPUBBLICA

By |2014-09-17T06:13:24-04:00June 3rd, 2013|Categories: Personal Musings, Travel|Tags: , |

After an intense week of writing, I treated Joe and myself to a full weekend of play. While Noble's Quest was debuting in NYC at the BookExpo America, we began our weekend shopping for quail at the Mercato Centrale in the Piazza near the church of San Lorenzo, and then stopped at the Perini Gastronomia for a scrumptious lunch. On Sunday, we celebrated Italy's most important national holiday, equivalent to America's Independence Day. On June 2, 1946, the monarchs in the House of Savoy were exiled and Italy officially became a republic. To celebrate this historic event, our generous [...]

INSPIRATION POINT

This is where my career as a writer began, sitting on the wall with the beautiful historic center of Florence spread before me and the eleventh century Basilica of San Miniato al Monte, complete with a bishop’s palace, at my back. The Florentines often refer to it as the “Gate to Heaven.” From personal experience, I concur. Every morning for six months each year, over the past ten years, I’ve sat on this wall. As I catch my breath after my power walk up the massive hills through the amazing Tuscan countryside, I begin to clear my head, plan [...]
